Abstract

Stable, concentrated solutions of urea, formaldehyde and the products of their reaction are prepared using hexamethylenetetramine to bring the pH to 7-8.5. Agents usually employed to change the pH of such solutions lead to the formation of salts which increase the hardening time of the final resin and which can give rise to undesirable electrical properties. Hexamethylenetetramine can be added, or formed in situ by the addition of ammonia, to solutions of urea, formaldehyde and their reaction products. The base becomes incorporated in the final resin in an unknown manner but does not affect its properties.
