Abstract

[Also in Divisions G3 and H3] A circuit for controlling the D.C. current through an inductive load L comprises an A.C. source 10 feeding the series connection of a diode D1 and load L, and a second source 12 in series with a thyristor T connected across load L. The period of A.C. source 10 is small compared with the time constant of inductor L so that a mean D.C. flows through the inductor. When, in each cycle, the A.C. voltage falls below the voltage of the D.C. source 12, thyristor T becomes forward biased and may be triggered into conduction by control circuit 14, thus supplementing the D.C. current in load L to an extent depending upon the instant of triggering thyristor T. When A.C. voltage 10 rises above the voltage of source 12 thy. ristor T becomes reverse biased and extinguishes. Source 12 may be of A.C., synchronous but anti-phase with source 10, as depicted in Fig. 7 (not shown), where sources 10 and 12 are replaced by the secondary windings of a transformer.
