Abstract

1,100,966. Fruit grading apparatus. E. H. T. BENSEMANN. 24, May, 1965 [29, May, 1964; 19, March, 1965 (2)], No. 21857/65. Heading B2H. [Also in Division B8] A machine for sorting articles such as fruit comprises an endless band 60 mounted for movement within a frame 50 and provided with spools 55 each formed with two successive groove portions each of which increases in width and depth towards the start of the following groove, and a cam-portion 56 which co-operates with a sloping track 54 to rotate the spool as it is moved from one end of the machine to the other. The fruit is fed into the cup-shaped openings formed by the grooves between the spools at the end of the machine having the slope 69 and is discharged through the openings when these have increased to the appropriate size during travel. The spools may be made of plastic or metal and are carried by spindles (61), Fig. 7 (not shown), which are mounted in the links of a chain conveyor driven by a motor 68. The cam-portion 56 is of heart shape and can be either weighted or spring-loaded into engagement with the track; the track is arranged to rotate the cams in the opposite direction to the rotary drive of the band and, if desired, may be arranged either above the chain instead of below or at an incline in the opposite direction to that shown. As in Figs. 25-28 (not shown), the track is divided into short lengths, each being adjustable to three alternative heights by means of a manually-operable slide (70) having three studs (74) projecting upwardly at different heights; when the slide is moved by rotating a screw (82), the appropriate stud acts upon a rigid structure (78), (77), (76), (80) to slide it within a vertical tubular guide (75) and move the corresponding length of track to the desired height. Several spools may be employed in side-by-side relationship on common spindles. In a modification, Figs. 15-21 (not shown), each spool is formed with a padded lip (58) which extends tangentially upwardly and co-operates with an adjacent spool to form a cup-shaped opening to receive the fruit.
