Abstract
A methylotated textile finishing compound is obtained by condensing a mixture of melamine and urea with formaldehyde or with substances which yield formaldehyde under reaction conditions in a system having a pH of at least 10.5. Condensation may be carried out in water or in a C1-C6 alkanol at a temperature of 60-90 DEG C. At least one gram-molecule of HCHO may be present for each gram-atom of reactive hydrogen bound to nitrogen of the urea and melamine. An acid curing agent may be used and curing achieved by heating, e.g. at 180-450 DEG F.ALSO:A methylolated textile finishing compound is obtained by condensing a mixture of melamine and urea with HCHO, or a compound which yields HCHO under reaction conditions, in a system having a pH of at least 10.5. Condensation may be carried out in water or in a C1-C6 alkanol at 60-90 DEG C. The textile finishing composition may comprise a 2-35% by wt. aqueous solution of the methylolated compound together with an acid catalyst. Fabrics treated include cotton, rayon, nylon, cotton-polyester and a cotton-rayon mixture. The fabrics may be dried after treatment and heat cured, e.g. at 180-450 DEG F. The composition may be applied in conjunction with a softener, e.g. a silicone or polyethylene dispersion, a fatty ester of glycerine or polyethylene glycol.
