Abstract

In the manufacture of highly polymeric polyesters by reacting a free aromatic dicarboxylic acid with a molar excess of a C2 to C10 polymethylene glycol or a polyester-forming derivative thereof, reaction is effected in the presence of an alkali metal salt of an inorganic acid having an ionization constant greater than 1 x 10- 3 at 25 DEG C., e.g. sulphuric, nitric, hydrochloric, hydrofluoric, iodic or phosphoric acid. Reaction may also be effected in the presence of catalysts (e.g. zinc glycoloxide or antimony compounds) and titanium dioxide. Many aromatic dicarboxylic are mentioned but the examples relate to reacting terephthalic acid with ethylene glycol.
