Abstract
The invention comprises solutions of wholly aromatic polyamides in organic compounds of formula <FORM:1100573/C3/1> where R is a C1- 6 alkyl group, R1 is a C1- 6 alkyl group or the two R1 groups together are a C1- 4 alkylene radical and X is O or S. They may be produced by (1) dissolving a diamine of formula NH2Ar(CONHArNHCOAr)nNH2 or NH2Ar(NHCOArCONHAr)NH2 where Ar is a C6- 15 aromatic radical and n is O or 1 in the organic compound, (2) cooling the solution to 10 DEG to - 20 DEG C., (3) adding an aromatic dicarboxylic halide of formula: X1COArCOX1, where X1 is halogen, and (4) stirring the solution. A base may be present, e.g. Et3N or pyridine. Polyamides specified include a condensate of m-phenylene diamine and isophthalic acid and condensates of N,N1-bis(m-aminobenzoyl) - m - phenylene diamine and terephthalic acid, naphthalene - 2,6 - dicarboxylic acid, biphenyl - 4,41 - dicarboxylic acid and isophthalic acid. Organic phosphorus compounds specified include dimethyl methyl phosphonate, diethyl methyl phosphonate, diethyl ethyl phosphonate, dipropyl propyl phosphonate, dibutyl butyl phosphonate and cyclic ethylene ethyl phosphonate. The products may be made into fibres.
