Abstract

1,100,338. Rotary pumps. DOUGLAS ROWNSON Ltd. Oct. 27, 1965 [July 28, 1964], No. 29992/64. Heading F1F. A rotary pump comprises a cylindrical housing 1, Fig. 1, eccentrically mounting a rotor 2 in the form of a spider having a number of identical, equally-spaced, axially-extending recesses 5 each with a detached co-operating member 6 movable in a generally radial direction with respect to its recess with each member 6 having a curved surface conforming with the inner surface of the housing and adjacent surfaces which when its recess is closest to the inner housing surface engage the side walls of the recess. Inlet and outlet ports 13, 11 in an end-plate (12), Fig. 2 (not shown) are of elliptical cross-section and lead into acutely angled connections 46, 45, the angle of which approximately equals the vector representing the resultant velocity of the liquid entering and leaving the pump. The pump is mounted on a pedestal 20 having an integral support 23 on which the pump is overhangingly mounted by means of three studs 31 and thumb nuts. The rotor 2 and members 6 may be made of hard rubber or plastics material with the rotor reinforced by a metal sleeve (35) supporting a transverse pin (37) which co-operates with a slot in the drive-shaft extension to permit of easy removal of the rotor 2 and members 6 for cleaning or renewal after the removal of the thumb nuts and housing cover and end-plates. As the rotor rotates, the pumped liquid produces a flushing and scrubbing action in the variable gap between each member and the leading wall of its slot. The pump may also be run in reverse with cleaning fluid passing therethrough which enables what is normally the trailing walls of the recesses to be cleansed.
