Abstract

Curable epoxy resin compositions are prepared by treating polyepoxides with an equilibrium mixture prepared by reaction of boric acid or boron trioxide with hydrofluoric acid which mixture is added either alone, or in the presence of solvents or carriers for the catalyst and reaction retardants. The polyepoxide may already have been compounded with reactive monomers such as monoepoxides, heterocyclic compounds of oxygen, and unsaturated monomers; thermoplastic or thermoreactive resins; solvents; plasticizers; fillers; colorants; and/ or other additives. Reaction retardants specified are ammonia and its salts; amines; amides of carboxylic and carbonic acids; amino acids; lactams; and cyano and nitrogenous heterocyclic compounds. The catalytic equilibrium mixtures are preferably added together with organic acids or metal soaps to control the ionic catalyst reaction. The compositions are suitable for use as coating, laminating, impregnating, adhesive and cable jointing compositions. Epoxy resin foams are made by adding a low-boiling solvent to the curable composition before curing.ALSO:Coating compositions comprising an epoxy resin, an equilibrium mixture obtained by reacting boric acid or boron trioxide and hydrofluoric acid and, optionally, reactive monomers, macromolecules, solvents, plasticisers, fillers, colorants and retardants (see Division C3) may be applied by spraying, rolling, brushing or dipping or by means of a fluidised bed to surfaces of, e.g. metal.
