Abstract

Synthetic resin compositions comprise a solvent having dissolved therein (A) an addition copolymer which is derived from a mixture of monomers comprising an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydride or an unsaturated carboxylic acid, the copolymer being capable of forming a thermoset resin by reaction with a resin-forming polyether containing a plurality of epoxide groups, and (B) a minor proportion by weight, based on the copolymer, of an amine or quaternary ammonium salt of fluoboric acid as a catalyst for the reaction between the copolymer and the ether. The compositions are used for coating substrates, for which purpose epoxide-containing polyethers are dissolved in the copolymer solutions, which are then applied to substrates and cured by baking. Copolymers specified are poly(styrene-co-ethyl acrylate - co - methacrylic acid), poly(vinyl toluene-co - methyl acrylate - co - acrylic acid), poly-(methyl methacrylate - co - ethyl acrylate - co - methacrylic acid), and poly(styrene-co-methyl methacrylate - co - ethyl acrylate - co - maleic anhydride - co - methacrylic acid). Preferred curing catalysts are C12-C16-alkyldimethylammonium didocenyldimethylammonium, (C9-C18-alkyltolylmethyl) trimethylammonium, ethyldioctylamine and cetyldimethylamine fluoborates. Epoxide-containing polyethers specified are condensation products of epichlorohydrin with glycerine, ethylene glycol and 4,41-isopropylidene-bisphenol. Suitable solvents for the compositions are diacetone alcohol, xylol and 2-ethoxyethyl acetate, and mixtures thereof. Specifications 518,057, 579,698 and 940,695 are referred to.ALSO:Surfaces of metal, wood and concrete are coated by applying thereto a composition comprising a solution in an organic solvent of a copolymer of an unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride, a polyepoxide and, as a catalyst for the reaction between the polyepoxide and the copolymer, an amine or quaternary ammonium salt of fluoboric acid (see Division C3), followed by baking the applied coating to harden it. The examples describe coating surfaces of phosphated steel with compositions comprising poly(styrene-co-ethyl acrylate-co-methacrylic acid), poly(vinyltoluene-co-methyl acrylate-co-acrylic acid), poly(methyl methacrylate-co-ethyl acrylate-co-methacrylic acid) and poly(styrene-co-methyl methacrylate-co-ethyl acrylate-co-maleic anhydride-co-methacrylic acid), in admixture with condensation products of epichlorohydrin and glycerol, ethylene glycol and 4,41-isopropylidene bisphenol, together with fluoroborate salts as catalysts.
