Abstract

1423973 Aqueous epoxy resin composition M & T CHEMICALS Inc 1 March 1974 [28 March 1973] 9406/74 Heading C3B An aqueous coating composition comprises (a) a crosslinkable reaction product of a polyfunctional epoxide with a monoalkanolamine and/or dialkanolamine having one of the following general formulae wherein R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are C 2 -C 3 alkylene radicals, A represents the residue of the polyfunctional epoxide derived from the reaction of epoxy radicals with a hydrogen atom bonded to the nitrogen atom of the alkanolamine x = 1 or 2, n=1-100, and Y is an anionic radical derived by removal of a hydrogen atom from a mineral acid or the carboxyl radical of a carboxylic acid, (b) a latent, heat-activable crosslinking agent which is a condensation product of formaldehyde with a phenol, urea or melamine; and (c) a liquid comprising at least 50% wt. water any remainder being a dissolved mineral acid, a carboxylic acid or a water-missible organic liquid. Component (a) preferably comprises 25-85% wt. of the composition and component (b) preferably comprises 5-45% wt. of component (a). Part of the alkanolamine may be replaced by a corresponding alkylamine, e.g. diisopropyl amine. In the examples aqueous compositions are prepared using as component (a) the product obtained by reacting mono- and di-ethanolamine with a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A or bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)methane using ethyleneglycol monobutyl ether as solvent and subsequently reacting the product with formic acid and then adding water; as component (b), urea-HCHO resin, mixed allylethers of mono-, do- and trimethylol phenols, a phenol-HCHO condensate or a melamine- HCHO condensate. In another composition component (a) is prepared by reacting mono- and di - ethanolamine with 3,4 - epoxycyclohexylmethyl - 3,4 - epoxycyclohexane carboxylate; component (b) is a urea-HCHO condensate, and component (c) is water, isopropanol and ethylene glycol monobutylether. The compositions are applied to Al, tin plated steel or steel panels and cured by heating or used to coat a steel plate electrophoretically.
