Abstract
<PICT:1100217/C1/1> Tetragonal GeO2 is prepared by heating Ge, non-tetragonal GeO2, or a mixture of these, in an atmosphere of hydrogen and water vapour, such that the ratio of hydrogen and water vapour pressures and the temperature are within the area ABC of the diagram. The temperature is preferably below 1210 DEG K. (937 DEG C.). In one embodiment, a germanium substrate is coated with GeO2 by heating it in a water and hydrogen atmosphere, the conditions being within the area ABED of the diagram, and optionally also heating Ge or GeO2 in the same atmosphere to a temperature higher than that of the substrate.
