Abstract
1,100,080. Making battery casings. SONOTONE CORPORATION. 11 Aug., 1966 [24 Sept., 1964], No. 36063/66. Heading B3A and B3Q. [Also in Division H1] A method of sealing an insulated metallic cover 23 in the end of a metallic battery casing 11 comprises forming, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), an inward recess in the casing to provide a shoulder 53, Fig. 4, and crimping the end 15 of the casing over the cover to seal the cover against the shoulder, which is supported by a radial compressive force in the recess. The battery may be a nickel-cadmium cell in which the casing, of nickel-plated steel, is spot-welded to one of the electrode-connectors 24 and the cover to the other connector 26. A rupturable metallic sheet 44 is disposed across the bottom of the cover, adjacent a hollow, piercing projection 48. The cover is insulated from the easing by an annular collar 34 of L-cross-section and a sheet 30 which may be integral with the collar. In a first operation (Fig. 2), the inward recess is formed by a roller (52) with the casing held in a chuck (55). In a second operation (Fig. 3), the recessed section is deformed to provide the shoulder 53 on which the cover and insulation are located. The crimping operation is performed in two stages with the recess supported by a toolcollar 63. In the first, Fig. 4, the end of the casing is folded over by a plunger 64 while the cover is held down by a member 71, and in the second, Fig. 5 (not shown), the operation is completed by a further plunger (72).
