Abstract

Tongs.-A gardening-implement for use in picking up or destroying weeds, slugs, &c., is shaped somewhat like the head of a duck or other bird, as shown in alternative forms in Figs. 1 and 3. The members 1, 2 are pivoted together at 3 at the head end, one or both members being enlarged to form the head, adapted to be grasped in the hand. The jaws are toothless and trough-shaped and adapted to penetrate the soil. Lateral strength is given by an interior flange 2a, Fig. 1, or by semicircular bearing flanges 4, Fig. 3. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the jaws are pressed apart by a spring 6, the ends 7 of the members serving as abutment stops. A rounded projection 8 guides and supports the jaws when closed. A further form is shown in which the hinge 3 is of ordinary form and situated in closer proximity to the abutment ends 7, the flanges 4 being dispensed with.
