HOLDINGTOOL. APPLICATION FILED FEB. 21, 1907- [NI ENTOR QSfoHer' CHRISTIAN STOLLER, OF PINEGROVE, WISCONSIN.
HOLDING-TOOL.
- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 17, 1907.
Application filed February 21, 1907. Serial N0- 358,703.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN SroLLnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pinegrove, in the county of Brown and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in HoldingTools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in holding tools and more particularly to that class adapted to be used for catching and holding animals and my object is to provide a tool of this class whereby the same may becaused to grip the leg of an animal while the operator is at some distance from the animal.
A further object is to provide means for automatically locking the jaws of the tool together simultaneously with the operation of directing the tool around the .leg of the animal.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved holding tool complete and showing the same partially closed. Fig. 2 is an edge elevation thereof, and, Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view as seen on line 33 Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates the main arm of my improved holding tool, the upper end of which is curved to form a jaw 2 while the lower end of the arm is provided with a socket 3 in which is adapted to be secured one end of a handle 4.
Pivotally secured to the arm 1 and at a point adjacent the intersection of the arm and jaw is an auxiliary arm 5 which is likewise curved at its outer end to form a jaw 6, said jaws being opposed to each other so that when they are brought together they will surround and engage the limb of an animal.
Pivotally secured to the arm 1 at a point below the pivot pin 7 is a bar 8, the outer end of which is provided with a latch 9 which extends across one edge and along one face of the auxiliary arm and that portion of the latch extending across the edge of the auxiliary arm is tapered as shown at 10 so that the same will readily engage notches 11 on the outer edge of the auxiliary arm 5, that portion of the auxiliary arm containing the notches being given an abrupt outward curve to compensate for the swinging movement of the bar 8 thereby insuring that the latch 9 will positively engage the notches when the two arms of the tool are brought to gether.
In order to conveniently and positively draw the arms together and close the jaws at the outer ends thereof and at the same time lower the bar 8 so that the latch 9 will hold the arms in their closed position, 1 secure to the latch 9 a link 12 to which is secured one end of a cable 13, said cable being directed through eyes 14 and 15 at the lower ends of the auxiliary arm 5 and main arm 1, respectively, so that when a pull is given to the cable 13, the bar 8 will be drawn over the notched portion of the auxiliary arm 5 and the auxiliary arm at the same time moved towards the arm 1 thereby closing the jaws 2 and 6.
The meeting ends of the jaws 2 and 6 are beveled as best shown at 16 in Fig. 2 of the drawing so thatthe ends of the jaws will readily telescope with each other when the jaws are brought together.
It is very difiicult at times to approach sufliciently close to the animal to grasp the same with the hands and to this end I have provided my improved tool and by making the handle 4 of sufficient length and likewise directing the cable 13 the full length of the handle, the operator may stand at some distance from the animal and apply the tool and when the jaws are brought together and the latch engaged with the notches on the auxiliary arm 5, it will be impossible to release the tool until such time as the bar is manually released from the notches.
What I claim is:
In a holding tool of the class described the combination with a main arm having a curved jaw at one end thereof and a socket at the opposite end thereof; of an auxiliary arm, means to pivotally secure the auxiliary arm to the main arm, a curved .jaw at the outer end of said auxiliary.
arm opposed to the jaw on the main arln, the meeting ends of said jaws being beveled, said auxiliary arm having an outwardly curved portion, notches on the outer edge of the "auxiliary arm coincident with the curved portion thereof, a bar pivotally secured to the main arm, a latch at the outer end of said bar having a tapered portion adapted to engage the notches in the auxiliary arm, a link secured to said latch, an eye at the inner end of each of said arms, a cable secured to said link and adapted to be disposed through said eyes whereby when the cable is moved longitudinally the jaws will be brought together and locked in their closed position and a handle secured to the socket on the main arm. I
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHRISTIAN STOLLER.
