Abstract

1,099,477. Extruding strapping. T. J. KARASS. April 5, 1965 [July 2, 1964], No. 14250/65. Heading B5A. [Also in Division E2] High tensile strength strapping is made by melt extruding polymeric material through a uniformly heated substantially rectangular die orifice, uniformly cooling the extrudate, heating the extrudate to a temperature below its softening point while at the same time applying a stretching force to axially orientate the molecules, and finally heating the extrudate while in. a relaxed condition a temperature above the second order transition temperature but below its softening point to anneal the material of the strapping. Polymeric materials specifically mentioned are polyethylene, polycarbonates, polyesters, nylons, acrylic resins and polystyrene, with polypropylene being the preferred material. Such material may be rendered light stable by the addition of suitable pigments. The strapping is intended to be of generally rectangular cross section, but may be somewhat thicker in the middle or at the edges, the edges may be rounded and ribs or grooves may be provided to act as registering devices when the strapping is wound into coils. Fastenings.-A fastening C, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), comprises metal bent to form a sleeve, the free edges of which are spot or line welded and the strapping A is held by crimps 18, 19 and dimples 21. A releasable fastening made from wire is coupled to the strapping as shown, Figs. 6, 7 (not reproduced), the or a free end of the strapping being first looped around transverse bar 112. A second releasable fastening, Figs. 8, 9 (not shown), is stamped from sheet steel.
