Abstract
1,099,298. Fuel elements. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Nov. 29, 1966 [Dec. 7, 1965], No. 53361/66. Heading G6C. A tubular fuel element through which coolant gas flows is clamped at its upper end (Fig. 1, not shown), to a suspension plate (18) of the reactor and is located at its lower end within an aperture 50 in a plate 30 forming part of a vertically-movable centring grid (28), the lower end of the fuel element being provided with a spigot 42 having centring fins 48. A bellows 52 provides a coolant seal. When a fuel element is to be positioned in the reactor core (14) the grid (28) is moved to its bottom position and the upper end of the element is then clamped to the suspension plate (18). Subsequently, the grid (28) is raised so that the spigots 42 of the fuel elements are located in the apertures 50 of the plate 30. In the event of misalignment between a spigot 42 and an aperture 50 the upward movement of the grid would damage that fuel element and to prevent this happening the spigot is connected to the fuel element by means which rupture under a predetermined force applied in the upward direction. This rupturing means comprises a ring 64 located against a shoulder 62 of the fuel element, the ring having inwardly-facing lugs 66 overlying the upper end 44 of the spigot, these lugs rupturing when a predetermined force is applied to the spigot and enabling the latter to enter a recess provided in the fuel element body.
