Abstract

1,099,284. Pulse generating circuits. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 23, 1965 [April 23, 1964], No. 16856/64. Heading H3P. [Also in Division H2] In a pulse generator of the type in which a pulse forming network PFN is first charged from a power supply via an inductor and a diode and subsequently discharged through a load so as to generate a pulse, the pulse amplitude is stabilized by means connected from the junction of the inductor and diode to a point having a voltage lower than that of the power supply. As described, the PFN is charged from a 3-phase rectifier system D4 ... D9 via a smoothing circuit L3, C2, inductor LI and diode D1 and subsequently discharged via a load by triggering thyratron V1. The pulse amplitude is stabilized by triggering a thyratron V2 when the PFN charges above a predetermined voltage, so as to divert energy from the charging inductor L 1 into capacitor C1. This capacitor is subsequently discharged via D2 and L2 into the PFN during subsequent cycles. The connection of the cathode of V2 to the mid-voltage point of the supply permits stabilization at lower output voltages. Point X may alternatively be connected to an auxiliary power supply of lower voltage, adjustment of which controls the pulse amplitude. Fig. 4 (not shown) relates to an alternative 3-phase power supply comprising three bridge rectifiers providing tapping points at one sixth, one half and five sixths of the available D.C. voltage.
