Abstract

1,099,067. Package. W. S. SCHNEIDER and A. P. CORELLA. July 13, 1966, No, 31497/66. Heading B8C. A package comprises a pair of overlying outer walls of thin flexible sheet material heatsealable on their inner surfaces and joined together to define a product-holding space, and includes a fold extending across the productholding space, the fold being thermally formed and set but capable of being straightened by applying transverse tension forces at opposite sides to open the side of the space. In one embodiment, a two-compartment package, particularly for inter-reactive products which are mixed within the package before use, is formed by joining along three margins two webs 10, 11 heat-sealable on one side only; a short marginal seal 18, Fig. 2, is arranged centrally of the fourth margin. The container thus formed is folded along transverse fold lines 20, 22 bisecting the seal 18 so that two compartments are formed. Application of heat and/or pressure at 20 sets the folds. The compartments are now filled and the seal 18 extended to close finally the package. To prevent the inner faces of walls 10, 11 from sealing together over a portion of the folded area, to enable communication readily to be established between the compartments, a patch 25, heat-sealable on one side only is placed between the package walls across fold line 20. Alternatively, an equivalent area of one wall may be painted with a suitable liquid to render it non heat-sealable. In order to interconnect the compartments, force is applied in the directions 28, whereupon unfolding at 20, 22 is caused. In an alternative embodiment, the webs may form an open-sided tube which is then folded transversely as above described, and the compartments formed filled through the open ends. A double web may replace the separate webs. The fold arrangement may also serve as a closure for a package of one compartment only, Fig. 9 (not shown).
