Abstract
109,884. Carter, L. E. Nov. 17, 1916. Stopping leaks.-Relates to means for preventing, in defective tubular boilers, the leakage of water into the fire or fire-box. Any water that leaks around a flue joint is passed into the flue. As shown in Figs. 2 and 4, the appliance consists of a tube 1 having slits 2 at one end and a circumferentially grooved flange 2 at the other. The tube 1 is pushed into the flue 9, the joint of which is leaky, and the flange surrounds the joint. Any water that leaks passes through slots 5 into the tube and flue. In another arrangement, the flange 3 is formed as a cap entirely closing the tube 1. To aid in securing the device in the flue, it is formed with an enlargement 10. A tool is shown in Fig. 7 for inserting the device when the fire is alight.
