Abstract

1,098,704. Electric cables. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 3, 1964 [Sept. 19, 1963], No. 36945/63. Heading H1A. In a cable having a flexible outer sheath of rubber, synthetic rubber or other elastomeric material, which surrounds an insulated and screened conductive core, the elastomeric material constituting the sheath 6 and the conductor insulation 4 are reinforced by fibrous material, the reinforcing fibrous material 7 for the sheathing having a higher percentage elongation at break than the fibrous material 11, 13 for the conductor insulation. The power conductors 3 have their insulation 4 surrounded by a metal/textile braiding 5 and are arranged with pilot and earth conductors 2, 1 within the sheath 6 which is of heavy duty polychloroprene. The fibrous material 7 contained within the sheath 6 is an open weave, or braid, or roving network of nylon, polyethylene-terephthalate or polypropylene and is embedded between separate lappings or extrusions which are bonded together. The insulation 4 of the power conductors 3 is reinforced by glass fibre rovings 11, 13 (Fig. 3) of opposite lay embedded between layers of insulation rubber 10, 12, 14 which have been vulcanized. Alternatively, this insulation can be made from layers of vulcanized natural rubber, butyl rubber, or ethylene propylene rubber and vulcanized chlorsulphonated polyethylene bonded together.
