Abstract

1,098,608. Lamps. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. July 21, 1965 [Sept. 30, 1964], No. 39751/64. Heading F4R. [Also in Division G1] The headlamp beam of a vehicle is increasingly masked off from the centre of the road side of the beam by a shutter moving across an apertured mask, through which the beam is projected, in response to and according to the angle of approach of the beam of an oncoming vehicle. A photo-cell 25 views an image of the beam of the oncoming vehicle formed somewhere in a further aperture 22, according to the angle of approach, and provides an output to rotate an armature carrying two shutters, one 27 covering the aperture 22 and a further one covering the aperture through which the headlamp beam is projected. The armature rotates until the leading edge of the shutter 27 covers the image in the aperture 22, by which time the other shutter has cut off the projected beam sufficiently to avoid dazzling the oncoming driver. A filter may exclude from the projected beam a range of wavelengths to which the photocell is exclusively sensitive. The description is similar to Specification 1,098,610.
