Abstract

1,195,845. Lamps. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. 4 Sept., 1967 [9 Sept., 1966], No. 40308/66. Addition to 1,098,608. Heading F4R. [Also in Division G1] In the vehicle headlamp dipping system of the parent Specification, where a photo-cell receiving light from an oncoming vehicle controls the movement of a shutter across an aperture through which the headlamp beam is projected, the shutter may be moved by a vacuum unit instead of the moving coil arrangement and additionally or alternatively the shutter may be mounted upon a rod movable longitudinally in the plane of the aperture. In one arrangement (Fig. 5), shutters 18 and 27, covering respectively the aperture 15 through which the headlamp beam is projected and the aperture 22 through which the oncoming vehicle's light is received by the photocell, are mounted upon a rod 29 hinged by arms 38, 39 for longitudinal movement. The output of the photo-cell operates a vacuum unit deriving its vacuum from the vehicle engine's inlet manifold to position the shutters in accordance with the direction of the oncoming light. In another arrangement (Fig. 1 not shown), the rod is carried by two leaf springs and moved longitudinally by a strap attached to a wheel fixed to a moving coil receiving the photo-cell output. Frequencies to which the photo-cell is most sensitive are removed from the projected beam by a filter or dichroic mirror focusing the beam.
