Abstract

1,098,502. Shock absorbers. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. Feb. 17, 1965 [Feb. 18, 1964; Dec. 24, 1964], No. 6951/65. Heading F2S. In a vehicle having a suspended road wheel and an associated fluid type shock absorber the shock absorber comprises a piston 2 and cylinder 3 assembly the interior 5 of the cylinder communicating with an hydraulic accumulator through a tube 4. A valve in the fluid flow path includes two telescopic sleeves 6, 8, the sleeve 8 being connected to the closed base of the sleeve 6 and to the piston 2 by springs 10, 11 respectively. The two sleeves 6, 8 are provided with a plurality of lateral holes 7, 9 which, in the position of rest of the shock absorber, are in coincidence but when the shock absorber telescopes the sleeve 8 moves to close the holes 7, 9 in relation to the degree of telescoping. The resilience of the springs 10, 11 is chosen such that the sleeve 8 may vibrate with a natural frequency of the high-frequency oscillations of the wheels to damp these oscillations. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) a deflector plate is provided on the base of the sleeve 8 and damping orifices formed in the plate and the base of the sleeve 8. Further in a purely hydraulic shock absorber (Fig. 3, not shown) the fixed sleeve 6 forms part of the stem of a hollow piston rod and the sleeve 8 is spring mounted within the stem of the piston rod.
