Abstract

A batch composition for injection moulding consists of a mixture of (a) comminuted ceramic or vitreous material having a particle size not less than 0.1 micron as the predominant constituent, (b) an organic binder which is solid at normal room temperatures, has a melting point below 200 DEG C. and a vapour pressure of at least 1 mm. Hg within the temperature range of from 20 DEG C. up to the melting point of the binder, and (c) up to 4% of colloidal ceramic or vitreous material having a particle size substantially smaller than 0.1 micron to inhibit bleeding during injection. Suitable materials for (a) are: 96% silica glass, fused silica, alumina, beryllia, magnesia, mullite, petalite, silica and spodumene. The material used for (c) may be the same as that used for (a) or may be a different one. The binder (b) may be naphthalene, paradichloro benzene or camphor. In the example, the batch consists of fused silica 66.3; naphthalene 30.1 and alumina 3.6 all parts by weight: Injection moulding is at 10,000 p.s.i., the mould cooled and the solidified body removed and heated to 70 DEG C. to drive off the naphthalene, which volatilizes direct from the solid state. The body is then fired at 1125 DEG C. to sinter the fused silica.
