Abstract

1,098,131. Insulated conductors. MIDLAND SILICONES Ltd. March 12, 1965 [Jan. 23, 1964], No. 2942/64. Heading H1A. A conductor is insulated by wrapping with a film of a flexible substantially moisture impervious organic material at least one surface of which is coated with a silicone rubber composition. The organic material may be polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, cellulose acetate, cellulose triacetate, P.T.F.E., a polyimide, a polybenzimidazole or polyoxadiazole. The silicone rubber composition may comprise a vulcanized organopolysiloxane or a semi- or non-vulcanized polysiloxane, may contain fillers or other additives, cross-linking agents and condensation catalysts, boron compounds such as alkyl borates or boric acid to impart self adhesion and preferably exhibits the property of " cold flow " under pressure. A composition containing two vulcanizing agents which act at different temperatures may be applied to the organic substrate and heated to activate one of the agents. The vulcanization is completed after application to the conductor. The composition may be applied from a solution or dispersion in e.g. toluene or xylene. A primer such as an alkoxysilane improves the bonding between the substrate and the silicone rubber composition.
