Abstract
A graft copolymer latex comprises a vinyl, vinylidene or vinylene carboxylic acid alone or in admixture with an alkyl ester thereof grafted on to an elastomeric ethylene/alpha-olefin saturated copolymer or an ethylene/alpha-olefin/cyclic or acyclic, non-conjugated diene low unsaturation terpolymer. Specified monomers are acrylic, methacrylic, sorbic, muconic and crotonic acids and alkyl esters thereof. The copolymer may be an ethylene/propylene or butene-1 copolymer or a terpolymer of ethylene/propylene/1,5-cyclooctadiene or dicyclopentadiene, or ethylene/butene-1 or pentene-1/1,4-hexadiene. The latex is prepared by heating a latex of the copolymer with an aqueous solution of monomer, employing a free radical initiator, e.g. organic peroxides and diazo compounds. Redox mixtures of an organic peroxide and a reducing agent, e.g. Fe2SO4, iron acetylacetonate or polyethylene amine may also be used. The latex may subsequently be bonded on to a substrate, e.g. textile fibres, by applying the latex and an aqueous dispersion of a phenol/aldehyde resin to the substrate, and then applying to the substrate a vulcanizable mix based on an ethylene/alpha olefin copolymer and containing a curing agent and curing the product (see Divisions B5 and D1). The graft copolymers may be cross-linked with a polyamine or a polyvalent metal oxide. In examples, ethylene/propylene copolymers are grafted with (i) acrylic acid, (ii) acrylic acid and methyl acrylate, or (iii) methacrylic acid, ethylene/propylene/cyclooctadiene-1,5 terpolymers are grafted with (i) and/or (iii) or crotonic acid and an ethylene/propylene/dicyclopentadiene terpolymer is grafted with (i).ALSO:An aqueous latex of a graft copolymer of a vinyl, vinylidene or vinylene carboxylic acid on an elastomeric ethylene/alhpa-olefin saturated copolymer or an ethylene/alpha-olefin/non-conjugated diene terpolymer (see Group C3) is used as a water-proof agent, for finishing wash and wear fabrics, as a softener for anti-crease resins and for adhering elastomers to natural or synthetic fibres. In examples, squares of rayon fabric are immersed in an adhesive mix containing the latex and a resorcinolformaldehyde resin and dried. The squares may then be placed between two layers of a vulcanizable elastomeric blend and the system vulcanized under pressure.
