Abstract
1,097,988. De-icing aircraft and propeller spinners. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Aug. 19, 1966 [Sept. 3, 1965], No. 37689/65. Headings B7V and B7W. [Also in Division F1] A surface of an aircraft is de-iced by a radiant heater which directs its radiant heat on the inside of the surface, at least one reflector being provided to reflect heat from the heat on to the surface. In the embodiment shown relating to a gas turbine engine, electric heating elements 16, 17, 18 extend completely around the inside of the intake lip 14. Annular reflectors 19, 20, 21 of parabolic cross-section are each located behind a corresponding one of the elements so as to reflect the radiant heat on to the inner surface of the lip 14 to de-ice the lip. The elements may be divided so as to allow continuous heating of some parts of the intake and cyclic heating of other parts. To maintain the reflectivity of the reflectors, the reflectors and the elements may be sealed in an inert atmosphere. Alternatively, the reflectors may be attached to the skin of the intake so that heat is conducted away from the reflectors, or cooling air may be applied to them. Heating elements may be provided within the hollow propeller spinner 13 to de-ice the spinner.
