Abstract

1,097,863. Central heating systems. N. LAING. Nov. 5, 1964 [Oct. 22, 1964], No. 41141/64. Heading F4U. In a central heating system in which a hotwater boiler supplies several heating circuits such as radiators 2 and a hot-water tank 10, the water is circulated by a cross-flow pump having a pump rotor 18 mounted in a distributer box 60. The hot-water supply 66a from the boiler and a return flow 9, 65a from each of the circuits is located on the suction side of the pump rotor and a thermally actuated valve 74 controls the proportion of freshly heated water from the boiler which is mixed with return flow water being recycled through pipes 3 into the circuits. The pump 18 and the control valve 74 are integrated into a single structure which may comprise the boiler itself (Figs. 11-17); or alternatively (and as shown) the housing 60 which is bolted to the boiler. In this latter embodiment the pump rotor is divided into axially spaced sections each serving one of the circuits and all driven by a common motor (15, Fig. 3). The control valve comprises a flap 74 movable through an arm 76 by a bimetallic strip 75<SP>1</SP>. Movement of the valve 74 controls the return flow (duct 65a, 9) mixing with the flow from the boiler (duct 66a) before returning to the various circuits.
