Abstract
Elements for random packing in gas/liquid contact colums or apparatus for removing liquid particles from gases have porous but non-capillary bodies made up of large numbers of irregularly-shaped open cells of varying size formed by interconnected strands, the cells communicating with each other through irregularly shaped pores, the average size of such pores being such that there are between 5 and 80, preferably between 10 and 50, pores per lineal inch. The elements may be formed as solid cylinders, thick - walled hollow cylinders, spheres or hexagonal prisms. The elements are rigid enough to resist deformation under operating conditions and may be made of a foamed plastic such as polyurethane, metal, ceramic material or interlaced fibres bonded to each other at their points of intersection. The strands of a foamed plastic material may be strengthened by a thermoset resin. The free volume of the elements is at least 50% and preferably 70%.
