In a servomechanism for turning a slave mechanism, platform 3 and a transparent capsule 25 Fig. 2 (not shown) and an output device in accordance with the angular displacement of an instrument such as a compass comprising a card (1) mounted on the needle (20), illuminated by a source (6) on one side, and having two photo-cells 4, 5 on the other, the photo-cells are mounted on the platform 3 together with a pair of amplifiers 14, 15 and the card is cut or slotted so that positional disagreement with the slave mechanism illuminates one only of the photo-cells to operate a corresponding relay and thus drive a motor 12 which effects realignment and drives the output device through a flexible drive 26, the realignment causing the card to cut off light from or admit light to both photo-cells. Suitable card shapes are described with reference to Figs. 3-6 (not shown) and the use of two light sources is referred to. Circuitry in which two phototransistors control the conductivity of two further transistors in series with relays is described with reference to Fig. 7 (not shown) and motor reversing circuits are described with reference to Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown).
