Abstract

1,097,393. Ratchet clutches. PLESSEY-UK Ltd. Oct. 23, 1964 [Oct. 28, 1963], No. 42423/63. Heading F2C. Sprags 5, of a oneway clutch, having cylindrical centre portions 8 spaced in cross-bars 9 of a cage 10, are each biased into contact with the clutch races 3, 4 by associated individual pre-tensioned helical torsion energizing springs 17, each having its free ends engaged in holes 18, 19 (Fig. 3), in the associated sprag 5 and cage end plate 12 respectively. The springs 17 are accommodated in closed pockets 17 in the cage plate 12 to prevent broken spring fragments penetrating between and damaging the sprags and/or races. The sprag cylindrical centre portions 8 may engage with clearance, for relative radial sprag movement, similar cylindrically formed edges of the cage cross-bars 9 or, the cross-bars 9 may be formed as plane parallel surfaces to allow the free radial movements of the sprags in operation. A helical oil groove 20 in the bore of the cage produces an hydraulic end thrust between the cage 10 and inner race 4 on relative rotation thereof, whereby locating faces (not shown) on the inner race 4 frictionally rotate the cage with the inner race to prevent wear on overrun.
