In a combined roller-bearing and freewheel unit, bearing rollers 3 and sprags 4, engaging between inner and outer cylindrical races 1, 2, are separated on one or both sides of each roller by spacers 5d, formed to a variety of shapes (Fig. 3, not shown) having line or surface contact with the races 1, 2, and arranged to prevent contact between the rollers and sprags during freewheeling. In Fig. 4 (not shown) rollers of a smaller diameter than the bearing rollers serve as spacers and, in Fig. 5 (not shown) the spacers are formed as small diameter cylindrical sleeves rotatable on cross-pins of a cage, the movement of the spacers in each case tending to release or engage the sprags during freewheeling and drive respectively In Figs. 6a to 12 (not shown) spacers of various shapes are rigidly connected by rings at one or both sides to form cages, of which alternate pockets may house rollers and sprags individually, or together or in a combination having twice as many sprags as rollers, the double pockets being arranged with the rollers preceding the sprags during freewheeling to prevent contact therebetween. In Figs. 13 to 15 (not shown) roller-like sprag members are biased into engagement by coiled torsion springs arranged on one end of the sprags and anchored on the spacers of an open-ended cage.
