Abstract
SO2 is removed from flue gas containing not more than 5% by wt. SO2 by the Claus reaction: 2H2S + SO2 --> 2H2O + 3S in the presence of a catalyst, the H2S being generated outside the flue gas and thereafter mixed with the flue gas. Preferably, the H2S is in sub-stoichiometric proportions (e.g. 50-90%) and the reaction is carried out at 100-150 DEG C. with activated alumina which may be regenerated by heating to above 445 DEG C. in an oxygen-free atmosphere, e.g. de-oxidized flue gases, to vaporize the sulphur, part of which may be used to form H2S. Other catalysts mentioned as suitable are active titania, mixtures of iron and aluminium oxides, zeolites and firebrick.
