Abstract

1,097,143. Removing liquid from solids. ESCHER WYSS A.G. March 4, 1965 [March 5, 1964], No. 9341/65. Heading BID. In the removal of oil from metal cuttings, the cuttings are treated with a second liquid, which may dissolve, detach or form an emulsion with the oil, and the liquids are thereafter separated from the cuttings in a centrifugal strainer. Oily metal cuttings are delivered from a bunker 1 on to a vibrating screen 19 which retains large pieces and drops the others into a bath 11 of soapy water. The cuttings are withdrawn from the bath by a screw 13 past a pipe 14 supplying further soapy water and dropped into the feed-screw 5 of a continuous push-type centrifuge 2. The centrifuge has a solids discharge screw 8, a wash liquid supply 27 and a filtrate discharge box 6 from which liquid is returned to bath 11, via a vessel 23 and pump 24. Liquid is removed from bath 11 by an overflow 15, vertically adjustable and having a filter 16, to a separator 25. The process may be extended to employ two or more intermediate liquids.
