Abstract

A process for hardening gelatin comprising reacting the gelatin with a sulphonamide of the formula RSO2.NH.CH2NHSO2R where R represents an alkenyl group containing 2 or 3 carbon atoms. The reaction may be carried out by contacting the gelatin with an aqueous solution of the hardening agent, e.g. at 30 to 60 DEG C., casting it in a thin layer and leaving it to harden at room temperature or at moderately elevated temperature.ALSO:Novel sulphonamides of the formula R.SO2.NH.CH2.NH.SO2.R where R represents an alkenyl group containing 2 or 3 carbon atoms, are prepared by reacting formaldehyde, or an equivalent molecular quantity of a formaldehyde donor with a sulphonamide, R.SO2NH2, in a molecular ratio of 1:2. The compounds are useful as monomers for homopolymerization and copolymerization, as hardening agents for gelatine and other water-soluble colloids containing OH, SH, NH or NH2 groups (see Divisions C3 and G2) for improving textile materials and for fixing reactive dyestuffs.
