Abstract

Tetramethyl tin is recovered from a solution consisting of tetramethyl tin and a watersoluble ether by contacting the solution with water thereby to form a tetramethyl tin phase and a water phase containing a water soluble ether; these phases are then separated. The ether has a high solubility in water at the extraction temp., i.e. 15-50 DEG C., and is preferably infinitely miscible with water. The soluble can contain at least one methyl tin halide, this halide entering the water phase during contact of the solution with water. The initial solution can be formed by reacting methyl magnesium halide and tin tetrachloride, this solution is hydrolysed and the organic phase is extracted with water, e.g. at 15-50 DEG C. and the tetramethyl tin phase is separated. The tetramethyl tin can be separated from the ether/water phase using a countercurrent extraction technique. Methyl tin oxides can be recovered from the water phase after removal of the ether by treatment with alkali.
