Abstract

An infra-red photo-detector includes a phosphor layer comprising powdered monocrystalline calcium fluoride doped with 1% by weight praesodymium which may be suspended in methyl methacrylate to form a layer 0.01-0.2 inch thick and supported on a glass, polystyrene or polyethylene terephthalate support, and a second layer of material reflecting to either infra-red or visible light, or to both. The reflective layer may be a thin slice of silicon or germanium transparent to infra-red but reflecting to visible light. Alternatively, the reflecting layer may be transparent to visible but reflective to infra-red radiation, e.g. a stack of quarter wavelength thick layers of alternately zinc sulphide (high refractive index) and magnesium fluoride (low refractive index). In a further embodiment, the phosphor layer may be sandwiched between two layers, the first being infra-red transparent and visible reflective, and the second vice versa. Alternatively, the phosphor layer may be mounted on a support reflective to both visible and infra-red, e.g. an aluminium film.
