A washing machine comprises a vertical basket 2 rotatably mounted in a water tank 1 and made up of two parallel walls connected by arcuate walls and an impeller 3 at the centre of the basket 2 mounted on a shaft 49 rotatable at high speed within a hollow shaft 46 secured to the basket there being provided means for releasably connecting the hollow shaft 46 to the impeller shaft, braking means operating on the hollow shaft and resilient means mounting the tank 1 in a framework 4 which last means, during operation, convert part of the vibration energy, by friction, into heat. The washing machine is as described in Specification 1,096,902 and the tank mounting comprises a washer 28 mounted in the upper corner of frame 4 and having associated with it a semi-spherical nylon piece 29, a suspension rod 30 passing through piece 29 and washer 28. The lower end of rod 30 passes through washer 36 on tank 1, a nylon piece 37 and a washer 40. The upper end of rod 30 is held by nuts 32 engaging a washer 31 and the lower end carries a rubber ring 38 and a cup like slider 39 sliding in a rubber pipe 42 and engaging a coil spring 41 whose other end engages washer 40. A leg 75 on washer 36 is connected to framework 4 by a bolt 76 during transportation. The top of tank 1 is connected to frame 4 by a rubber member 11. The machine control is as described in Specification 1,096,902 and when the spin drying is completed and motor 14 is stopped to stop the rotation of shaft 46, electromagnet 18 is de-energized. Shaft 49 is thus disconnected from shaft 46, spring 72 is contracted and unites sleeves 67, 71 and thus brake disc 64 stops basket 2.
