Abstract
1,096,894. Polishing. MONSANTO CO. Feb. 22, 1965, No. 7606/65. Heading B3D. Silica sol is used as a polishing agent. The silica particles preferably have an ultimate particle size of 5-125 millimicrons and the concentration of solids in the sol is preferably from 2 to 50%. The sol may be an aquasol, an organo-aquasol or an organosol. The organic liquid may be a monohydric alcohol (e.g. ethanol or isopropanol), a polyhydric alcohol (e.g. ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol or glycerol) or an aldehyde or ketone (e.g. formaldehyde or acetone). Materials polished include semi-precious and precious stones; other minerals such as granite, quartz, marble, gypsum, sandstone, slate, basalt, feldspar; glass; ceramics; metals and alloys; semi-conductors; wood and plastics. Specific examples are given of polishing the following: plate glass; granite; sapphire; diamond; aluminium alloy; titanium; yellow brass; magnesium alloy; low carbon steel; stainless steel; silicon wafers; gallium arsenide wafers; zinc selenide wafers and germanium.
