Abstract

Powder-mixt. of pure Al2O3 and 3-8 wt.% mixt. of 3 or more oxides of heavy metals with atomic nos. 22-29 (pref. 24-27) are shaped and then sinter-sealed at 1270-1400 esp. 1300-1350 degrees C, to form high-grade Al2O3 ceramics, useful as insulators, pref. as lids or base plates for integrated circuits with semi-conductors and as supports for electrical conductor strips (where they also act as black body radiators), also as machinery components requiring high hardness. Materials are impermeable to visible and ultraviolet light and have mechanical strength and heat-conductivity exceeding those of high grade Al2O3 ceramics of Standard Sheet DIN 40 685 for Gp. 708.
