Abstract

1,096,686. Batteries. OLDHAM & SON Ltd. and H. MORTON. Oct. 22, 1965 [Oct. 27, 1964], No. 43825/64. Heading H1B. To prevent short circuiting of the intercell connections with consequent sparking should a metal object be dropped on to the top of a mining battery, each cell e.g. 2 is sealed into a box 4, with its terminals e.g. 11, 11a, 12, 12a extending through the lid 7 of the box and is housed in an individual cell container 23, which provides a headspace 35 above the box 4, through which an intercell connector or connectors e.g. 39 passes to the headspace above the adjacent cell box. The intercell connectors are multistranded insulated cable and are crimped into copper lined socket terminals e.g. 42, 43 of adjacent cells. Each connector passes through a two part gland 48 which fits into the adjacent walls of the cell containers 23, 24. The glands and headspaces may be filled with granular, non- inflammable material e.g. sand, silica beads or expanded polystyrene. To facilitate replacement of a cell the connector may be made in two parts which are crimped into a metal sleeve fitting into the gland. The cell containers are made from polyester glass wool, epoxy resin glass wool or steel coated with polyethylene. Their lids are made of polyester glass wool. The cell boxes are made of polypropylene and have transverse inserts 19 to support the plates 17.
