Abstract

1,096,639. Drawing. AEROPROJECTS Inc. Oct. 4, 1966 [Oct. 4, 1965], No. 44329/66, Heading B3P. Vibratory tube drawing apparatus comprises a die, a vibratory generator coupled to the die, means on one side of the die for pulling tubing axially therethrough, and a free-floating plug partly within the die orifice, the plug having a physical length corresponding to an acoustical length of an odd integral number of one quarter wavelengths of sound in the material of the plug at the generator frequency, the plug having one end in the die orifice and a second end thereof on the side of the die opposite the pulling means, the plug being acoustically non-compliant at the end in the die orifice. The apparatus may be a bench for drawing discrete tube lengths or a machine in which tubing from coils is pulled through a die by a drawing block. The die 12 is screwed into an acoustical coupler 40 connected to four transducers, of which three are shown, 50a, b and c, which are driven at 28 kc/s. The acoustical coupler 40 is carried by a force insensitive mount 52 comprising a sleeve of low hysteresis material which is one half wave-length long at the operating frequency. A flange 58 at the middle of the sleeve is clamped to a support 60. The plug 16 is made of an acoustically non- compliant material such as tungsten carbide and has a forming end 18 and a free end 20. The plug may be of one-piece or composite construction. In an example a plug of tungsten carbide, one quarter wavelength long was used to draw a copper tube À093 in. diameter, wall thickness À0062 in. at 75 ft./min., with a 40% cross-sectional area reduction.
