Abstract

To strengthen a glass article formed from a parent alkali metal silicate glass in which the primary alkali metal ion has a radius larger than the lithium ion, an encasing surface layer differing in molecular structure is formed by contacting the surface with a salt of an alkali metal of relatively smaller alkali metal ion at a temperature above the strain point of the glass and thereafter exchanging a portion of the smaller ions from the surface layer with ions of larger ionic radius without rearrangement of the glass structure. The second part of the process may be effected either by heating so that alkali metal ions from the parent inner structure diffuse into the surface layer or by contacting the surface layer with a further molten bath of a salt of the larger ion such as an alkali metal or silver salt, both processes being at a temperature below the strain point of the glass. Preferably the first ion exchange is effected with a Li salt and the examples give the parent glass as within the following ranges in percentages by weight: SiO2 45-80; Na2O and/or K2O 5-25; Al2O3 and/or ZrO2 5-25; and optionally P2O5 2-20; and the following up to 5, Li2O; unspecified alkali metal oxides; unspecified alkaline earth oxides; Sb2O3, As2O3, PbO, TiO2. A number of examples of glasses, compositions of treating baths and temperature and time schedules are given.
