Abstract
1,096,128. Winding webs. FRANK W EGAN & CO. March 11, 1966 [Aug. 9, 1965], No. 10735/66. Heading B6B. In a two-drum web-winder, the completed web-roll R is ejected by a pusher 100 movable in the horizontal direction, Fig. 3, between parallel guides 113, with means for producing an air cushion between the web roll R and the pusher 100. The pusher consists of a bar of approximately trapezoidal cross-section (Figs. 9 and 10) having one side (101) machined concave to complement the curvature of the webroll R. A groove 102 communicates with a manifold passage (103) via a plurality of drilled passages (104). Compressed air is supplied to the manifold (103) via pipes and fittings (106). A curved deflector plate 107, pivoted to the bottom of the pusher 100, assists the initial wrapround of the leading edge of the web to a new core (Fig. 6). The pusher bar is pivotally located in a U-shaped frame comprising slide bars 110 (Fig. 8) and a cross-piece (111) by journal extensions 109. The slide bars have extension arms 114 which are clipped to a pair of parallel roller chains 115. The roller chains 115 are driven by a fluid cylinder (123, Fig. 1) via a chain (121) driving a sprocket attached to the shaft 118. In addition, the pusher 100 is rotated relative to the U-shaped frame by fluid cylinders 126. The web may be longitudinally slit by slitters (28, Fig. 1) and separated transversely by a spreader roller (29) before being wound. As the diameter of the web-roll increases, a riderroller 34, mounted between pivoted arms 33, moves upwardly, so that a core inserter 39 mounted coaxially with the rider-roller 34 picks up a new core 41b from a core loader 75. When the web-roll has attained the required diameter, the pusher 100 is moved towards the web-roll, and ejects the web-roll from between the two winding drums and deposits it in the cradle formed by winding drum 14 and discharge roller 19 (Fig. 5). In the meantime, the core inserter 39 rotates, and as it approaches the horizontal position, the ends of the new core 41b engage cam surfaces 130 which are resiliently mounted on the rider roller arms 33. Continued rotation of the core inserter 39 urges the new core 41b into contact with the rotating rider-roller 34, thereby accelerating the core up to the speed of the running web. The rider-roller arms 33 then lower the new core into contact with the running web on the drum 13 (Fig. 6) with the pusher retracted, whereupon a knife mechanism 81 is raised to sever the web and blasts of air (96) wrap the leading edge of the web around the new core. The new core is then lowered into the cradle between the drums 13 and 14 (Fig. 7) and the completed web-roll R is deposited on to the slidably mounted tracks (24) of a roll-receiving table (22, Fig. 1). In an alternative (Fig. 13) two adjacent pusher bars (130 and 131) are used. The pusher bars may be changed in position relative to each other, so that the radius of curvature of the concave sides in combination may effectively be changed to suit web-rolls of various diameters.
