Abstract

1,096,090. Towing couplings for trailers. H. S. BRADLEY and K. BRADLEY. Oct. 14, 1966, No. 45952/66. Heading B7T. [Also in Division F2] A towing coupling for a trailer, e.g. for towing caravans behind motor vehicles, comprises a hollow steel draw-tube 20 screwed at 18 on to a coupling head 10 which can accommodate a ball (not shown) on a towing vehicle, the tube 20 slidably engaging for limited axial movement a cast metal housing 26 secured by flanges 28 to the towing bracket (not shown) on the trailer, a pneumatic or hydraulic ram-and-cylinder damper 54 being resiliently connected at 60-66 to a bracket 46 on the head 10, and at 68-74 to side walls 52 of the housing 26. A resilient synthetic plastics ring 42 engageable with a nut 22 on the tube 20, is provided in a bore 40 in a boss 38 of the housing 26. In a modification, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), a part-elliptical spring steel member (80) is fitted in grooves (76), (78) in the nut 22 and the bore 40, to prevent motion between the tube 20 and housing 26 until a predetermined load is exceeded. A linked pair of overrun brake levers 82 are pivoted at 84 to the walls 52 and are spring- loaded to bear on the nut 22, and are connected to a trailer brake rod 90. A linked pair of handbrake levers 104 are also pivoted at 84, and carry a bridge 108 which normally rests on the levers 82, and a pawl 110 normally spring urged into engagement with a rack 98 on the housing 26. A reversing stop 118 comprises a channel 120 having slots 126 receiving a pin 128 fixed in side wall 52, and a pin 130 supporting a spring 132, a further channel 122 having a recess 142 and normally resting on the pin 84, and a tongue 124. A plunger 136 is provided on the housing 26 for extension into engagement with the recess 142 during reversing, the lost motion provided by the slots 126 ensuring that the stop 118 drops down on towing.
