Abstract

1408038 Tractor-trailer couplings GRAU BRAKE SYSTEM 26 Sept 1972 [25 Oct 1971] 44353/72 Heading B7T [Also in Division F2] A tractor-trailer coupling has an overrun device comprising a friction damping member 4 mounted on one coupling part and extending within another part, the one part having an abutment surface having wedge engagement with the member 4; first and second stops alternatively act on the opposite side of the member 4 each stop being carried by one of the parts, one acting during traction and the other during overrun, the wedge engagement increasing friction damping during traction as opposed to overrun conditions. A tubular drawbar 1 slides within a trailer coupling tube 2 having an anchor bar 3. The member 4 slides in the drawbar between a wedge surface 5 fixed to the bar 3 and the opposite side surface actuated by either of the stops, one defined by a ring 12 welded to the drawbar 1 and the other by a shoulder 6 on the anchor 3 by means of a disc 10 to reduce friction upon relative leftward drawbar movement (driving trailer braking); the disc can be cup shaped or have a cavity or cavities to accept member material. A further damping ring 18 may be provided between the drawbar 1 and the coupling 2. The member 4 has a smooth, corrugated, or serrated peripheral surface drawbar 1 and the coupling 2. In an alternative embodiment the drawbar 1 surrounds the coupling 2. In a further alternative, the anchor bar 3 is dispensed with, and the drawbar and the coupling forming a bearing in which the friction member 4 slides with limited displacement. Overrun causes the ring 12 to move a lever 13 to apply trailer brakes.
