Abstract

1,096,025. Superconductors. NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR RESEARCH IN NUCLEAR SCIENCE. Oct. 23, 1964 [Oct. 24, 1963], No. 42045/63. Heading H1K. [Also in Division G1] Apparatus for measuring the level of a very cold liquid 11 (Fig. 1), e.g. liquid helium, comprises a loop of niobium-zirconium wire 1, supported in a glass tube 3 from the wall 10 of a vessel containing the liquid, and connected in series with a battery 8 and a swamping resistance 9 to keep the current constant. The temperature of the liquid is sufficiently low to make that part of the wire 1 immersed in the liquid superconducting, so that a voltmeter 12 across the wire 1 indicates the length of the exposed part of the wire 1, and hence the level of the liquid. A vent 4 is provided in the tube 3. In another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown), the wire 1 is coated with expanded polystyrene provided with a number of radial cuts which bare the wire at intervals.
