Abstract
Alkali-metal salts of polycarboxylic acids are obtained by causing a polyaldehyde obtained by polymerization of an a -unsaturated aldehyde to undergo a Cannizzaro reaction to produce a polyhydroxycarboxylic acid, and oxidizing the polyhydroxycarboxylic acid in an aqueous alkaline medium containing ions of said alkali metal using as oxidizing agent a mixture of cupric oxide or cupric hydroxide and a noble metal or noble metal oxide or noble metal hydroxide whereby the desired alkali-metal salt is obtained. The oxidizing agent can be regenerated in situ.
