Abstract

1,095,769. Control of A.C. motors. COMBUSTION ENGINEERING Inc. Dec. 9, 1965 [Dec. 28, 1964],(2)] No. 52399/65. Heading H2J. An induction motor 10 is adapted for static and dynamic braking by supplying both its stator and rotor windings with direct-current when the driving potential is interrupted. The braking current is supplied through transformer T9 and diodes D14, D15, to stator coils 12, 14, in parallel and then stator coil 16 in series. The braking current then passes through rotor coil 44 in series with the parallel-connection of rotor coils 42, 40, a silicon controlled rectifier SCR2 being included in the braking circuit. This rectifier is only gated through Zener diode D16 when all four transformer secondary windings T1-S2 . . . T4-S2 are energized, the primary windings T1-P . . . T4-P being energized together when the stator windings are disconnected from supply-lines L2, L3. Threephase power is applied to the motor through four similar networks 22, 24, 26, 28, each comprising a silicon controlled rectifier in a diode bridge circuit, pairs of the networks being rendered effective alternately for reversing the motor. When the silicon controlled rectifiers of one pair of networks are gated, the gating of the other rectifiers is prevented. The gating circuit for the rectifier SCR1-A, for example, comprises transformer secondary winding T5-S whose primary winding is supplied from a transformer having primary winding T2-P. The latter is energized only when rectifier SCR1-B is non-conductive. Thus, it is not possible to gate rectifiers SCR1- A, SCR1-B, simultaneously. Rectifiers SCR1-C, SCR1-D, are interlocked in a similar manner. The braking circuit comprises several eddy-current loops, both on the stator and rotor sides, diodes D12, D13, limiting the braking current in the primary circuit at high speeds but providing a low-resistance path when the speed approaches zero. The secondary loops comprise resistors R3, R4, R5.
