Abstract
1,095,648. Stamping. HOUDAILLE INDUSTRIES Inc. May 18, 1966 [May 19, 1965], No. 22179/66. Heading B3Q. [Also in Divisions B5 and B6] An hydraulic die assembly for forming sheet material 18 into a die-cavity 16 with a flexible diaphragm 49 comprises a floating holder 26 for the diaphragm having a bore 31 engaged by a stationary piston 36, movement of the die 13 and of the holder 26 when engaged by the die towards the piston pressurizing fluid 57 in the bore 31 for effecting the forming operation. For forming automobile bumpers &c. from sheet metal, six spaced pistons 36 engage bores in the holder 26, each end piston (36a), Fig. 2 (not shown), pressurizing fluid in three passages (32, 32a) beneath the diaphragm. The pistons are adjustable in concave seatings 44 in a base 19 the ends of which carry guides (70) for the holder 26 and for a holder 12 for the die 13, which is clamped in holder 12 by force-fitted shims 15 and wedges (65, Fig. 2). Rods 22 (71) support the holder 26 on a pad 23 supported by fluid, e.g. air or oil, or air and hydraulic media. The rubber &c. diaphragm is clamped in a continuous recess by a ring 50 of hard rubber or steel, bonded to the diaphragm and secured to the holder by screws 150. The cylinders 31 are filled through one side with oil &c., air and excess hydraulic fluid being discharged through a vent-tube 56 the end of which is adjacent the diaphragm. Segmental die.-In a modification for reentrant work (100), Fig. 6 (not shown), the top die is formed in sections (105, 106) of which the end sections (106) are biased away from the centre section (105) by pneumatic cylinders (109). Cam surfaces (116-119) on the diesections (106) and the base (114) close the die as it moves towards the base.
